Microneedling: Important Facts

Microneedling roller on woman's chin in med spa

It seems like posts and videos about microneedling are all over social media. Everywhere you look, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and other platforms, you can see someone promoting the benefits of this popular procedure. You may have even watched your favorite beauty influencer or vlogger go through the procedure. With microneedling becoming a widespread phenomenon, you may be wondering if it is right for you. Youthful Reflections is here to help educate you on what this procedure is and how it can benefit you.

What Is Microneedling? The microneedling procedure involves brushing a roller or pen, with very fine, short needles over your skin. This procedure is very popular with both women and men. Some of the common benefits of microneedling include:

  • Boosting collagen production
  • Reducing the look of scars
  • Enhancing the overall radiance of the face
  • Helping topical products reach a deeper layer of the skin
  • Rejuvenating hair growth

While microneedling is the most commonly used name for the procedure, you may also hear it referred to as skin needling, collagen induction therapy (CIT) and percutaneous collagen induction (PCI).

Is It Effective?

You may be wondering how effective this procedure is. Using microneedles on the face can provide many scientifically proven benefits.

1. An Increase in Collagen Production

As people age, collagen production reduces. An essential protein in your body that helps to give your skin structure, collagen is also responsible for your skin’s elasticity. As collagen production decreases, we see more fine lines and wrinkles, which can often lead to skin sagging. These are some of the most common concerns of many Youthful Reflection clients. Microneedling is believed to increase the production of collagen, which results in a more youthful complexion.

A German study on percutaneous collagen induction therapy, another name for microneedling, showed that participants who went through treatment sessions for six months saw a dramatic change in collagen and elastin levels.

2. A Reduction in the Appearance of Scars

Microneedling may also improve the look of scars without the need for surgical treatments. According to a study from the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery on atrophic facial scars, often caused by acne, patients with this type of scarring saw a huge improvement within two months of undergoing the procedure.

3. An Increase in the Benefits of Skincare Products

A study in the European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences showed that using needle rollers on the face had a massive effect on how the skin absorbed skincare products.

According to the researchers, the needle treatment can improve how the skin reacts to water compounds in topical products applied on the face. Because of this, it is incredibly helpful in preventing transepidermal water loss (TEWL), which is a common issue as we age.

The participants noted that their pores noticeably reduced in size, which limited the water loss that may occur when the pores are widely open. Although perforations are created during microneedling, the patients benefited from the tiny holes which helped the skin to absorb products better, making them more effective.

According to many people, including media personalities, bloggers, and vloggers, they noticed that their skin became more radiant or glowing after microneedling. Needling can also help make skin feel soft. Some people have even reported that they stopped using makeup because they no longer needed it to cover up their imperfections.

What are the Other Benefits of the Microneedling?

Aside from boosting collagen production and reducing the appearance of scars, many people turn to this procedure for the following reasons:

  • Reducing fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead
  • Reversing the effects of sun damage
  • Improving pigmentation due to acne and ultraviolet rays
  • Reducing the signs of aging
  • Shrinking pore size

In addition to the face, the tiny needles can also be used all over the body to reduce cellulite. However, most people simply opt for the treatment on their face because it offers quicker and more proven results.

At Youthful Reflections, we stress the importance of having an experienced professional perform any facial procedure, including microneedling. Before going through the process, you can schedule a consultation session with Dr. Boggess, in order to discuss your goals and address any concerns you may have.

After the Procedure

After the microneedling procedure, you will notice that your facial skin is a little more sensitive. Your skin will be red and a bit swollen, like you have a sunburn, for 1 or 2 days. There may also be a little discomfort at the site, bruising, and even flaking. In very rare cases, there may be some bleeding, but it is not a common reaction unless you had a deeper treatment. Because your skin will be more sensitive while healing, it is important to use gentle skin products until you are fully healed. Your facial expert at Youthful Reflections will give you instructions on how to care for your skin to get maximum results and benefits.
