Perhaps you have heard of microneedling and would like to learn more about this non-surgical facial procedure. The staff at Youthful Reflections and Dr. Michael Boggess would like to answer the questions we most often receive about what is involved in this treatment. Microneedling has been used to treat acne scars and hair loss as well as the signs of aging. Often called skin needling, collagen induction therapy (CIT), and percutaneous collagen induction (PCI), microneedling is minimally invasive and can reduce the look of scars, offer a boost of collagen and improve skin issues.
How is microneedling done?
While microneedling is not painful, your aesthetic nurse will first apply a topical anesthetic to the area to be treated.
Microneedling consists of inserting short, very fine needles into the skin. Often a device called a dermaroller is used. A dermaroller is made up of micro-fine needles that are tiny like pinpricks. They can be anywhere from 0.5 to 2.5 millimeters in thickness and only brush across the surface level of the skin.
Microneedling benefits include the encouragement of the natural production of elastin and collagen, healing agents made by your body, that will enhance the procedure, making your skin look more youthful, brighter and tighter.
After the procedure, your aesthetic nurse will apply a serum to enhance continued collagen production.
What are the results of microneedling?
Your skin will have a rosy color and will look plump and luminous for a few weeks. In the short-term, it makes the skin appear more radiant as it plumps the skin.
An improvement over time is the overall goal. A study done in 2008 showed evidence that four treatments performed over 4 months, produced an increase of elastin and collagen of 400 percent.
It is recommended that skin needling be paired with topical treatments to increase its efficiency. In some cases, anti-aging preparations penetrate more effectively through the needles. Radiofrequency can also be paired with this procedure for the tightening of tissue over a period of months.
Who can have this procedure?
As long as you do not have any lesions, active infections or any known wound healing issues, you can have this procedure performed. Microneedling has been used to treat brown spots, acne scarring, wrinkles, fine lines, loose skin, skin texture, pore size, and pigment issues.
How often will I need this treatment?
The number of microneedling treatments needed will depend on the individual and their particular case. However, three to six sessions, spaced one month apart, is the usual duration of treatment.
