Are you often asked if you’re tired, even when you feel rested? Or perhaps you appear worried or angry, even when content. The area around the eyes can communicate misleading signals about your age or mood if you have droopy eyelids, puffy under-eye bags, or hooded upper eyelids. Upper and lower eyelid surgery is a popular, long-lasting solution.
Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a fairly straightforward procedure that produces dramatic results when performed by a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon. It has one of the highest patient satisfaction rates, with a 92% “worth it” rating on the RealSelf website.
Combining Eyelid Surgery With Other Procedures
You’ll notice in the blepharoplasty before and after photos on this page that none of the patients underwent standalone eyelid surgery. That’s because facial aging rarely occurs in a single area of the face, and performing other procedures at the same time produces better overall results.
That’s why I developed the Reflection Lift, a customized approach to facial rejuvenation that often includes a facelift, laser skin resurfacing, eyelid surgery, and fat transfer. My patients’ before and after photos demonstrate the effectiveness of addressing multiple aesthetic concerns at once.
Upper Blepharoplasty Surgery
People choose upper eyelid surgery for many reasons. Some patients need the procedure, for instance, because sagging eyelids obstruct their peripheral vision. And even though aging is often why men and women get upper eyelid surgery, younger patients who inherit hooded eyelids choose to get the procedure for a more alert appearance. I wrote about other reasons younger patients might get eyelid surgery in a previous blog post.
During upper eyelid surgery, the surgeon makes an incision in the lid’s natural crease after numbing the area with a local anesthetic. It typically involves removing excess skin and, in some cases, fat.
Lower Blepharoplasty Surgery
I also perform lower eyelid surgery using a local anesthetic. During the procedure, I can make an incision on the inside of the lower eyelid or the outside, just below the lash line. An external incision is needed to remove skin and muscle during the surgery. Lower eyelid surgery may also include removing protruding fat that creates the appearance of under-eye bags.
Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty Surgery
Combining upper and lower eyelid surgery restores a more youthful appearance by removing excess skin and fat deposits, tightening muscles, and smoothing wrinkles. The result? Eyes that appear refreshed and rejuvenated.
The Benefits of Eyelid Surgery
Besides the aesthetic rewards of having blepharoplasty, the procedure can boost your confidence in both personal and professional environments because you’ll look more youthful and alert. And, unlike temporary solutions such as makeup or creams, eyelid surgery results are long-lasting. While aging continues naturally, the effects of blepharoplasty endure, ensuring that you enjoy your rejuvenated appearance for years to come.
The advanced surgical techniques I use limit the downtime associated with eyelid surgery. Even though some swelling and bruising are to be expected initially, most patients can return to their normal activities within a week or two following the procedure. This means you can enjoy the benefits of a refreshed appearance without putting your life on hold for an extended period.
