Plastic surgery practices across the U.S. are seeing what some have dubbed the “Zoom boom” as people who spend hour after hour looking at themselves during video meetings are deciding their faces could use a pick-me-up. And with the upcoming holiday season—which is typically a popular time to schedule cosmetic surgery—virtual gatherings are likely to lead to even more people considering procedures such as facelift surgery at our Nashville, TN, practice.
It may surprise people to see plastic surgery trending during an ongoing pandemic, but the reasons for the trend make sense. Not only are people spending more time looking at themselves and others in virtual meetings, but the recovery process is more convenient because many women and men are staying home anyway.
Why Winter is ‘Plastic Surgery Season’
Even before the pandemic, facial plastic surgeons were kept busy during the last few months of the year. Patients who want a refreshed appearance before attending holiday parties have made the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas a popular time for getting facelifts, neck lifts, eyelid surgery, and nonsurgical cosmetic treatments.
Many people plan to have time off around the holidays, making the downtime following surgery more convenient. Now that people are working from home and avoiding in-person social gatherings during the pandemic, it offers more opportunity to schedule cosmetic surgery.
In fact, people getting facial plastic surgery may not even need to take as much time off from work than before the pandemic. They may need to skip a couple of Zoom meetings with colleagues, but they can continue working from home instead of taking time off as they recover from surgery.
Virtual Holiday Parties
Many public health experts recommend that people avoid the traditional holiday parties to minimize the spread of coronavirus. That means more virtual face time than ever before as companies, family, and friends adapt by scheduling events on social media video platforms. For many of us, virtual meetings tend to draw attention to the face’s least attractive features.
Plastic surgery isn’t necessarily the solution for everyone, though. Laser skin resurfacing, injections of BOTOX® Cosmetic or dermal fillers, or a combination of procedures may be the best treatment path. My patient featured in this Instagram post underwent my signature Reflection Lift and laser skin resurfacing to get the results she wanted.
